The Tattoo
Fithi Garza decided to tattoo his late brother’s name in Chinese on his arm. He did it in a back room in Dalian’s Nepalese Bar. There is, by my estimation, exactly one advantage to getting inked in the back of a Chinese laowai bar: the characters will probably be right.
Production notes: This was all done on my Canon point and shoot, as usual, and I’m pretty satisfied with the sound quality. Note to self: Get all primary interviews done before the subject’s friends show up with beer. Editing went faster this time. I think I’m getting the hang of this.

what camera ru using? my old sony point’n’shoot is useless at video. thinking of upgrading soon. thanks.

Glad you guys like the video. I’m going to try getting more up soon.
I’m using a Canon A530 that I bought in May 2006. The video quality is decent at 320×240, where it shoots at a normal frame rate (I think 30 fps). Shooting at 640×480 drops it down to 15 fps or less, so that’s not as useful.
There’s probably much better stuff out now for the same price, but I’ve generally been happy with the Canon line. I used an earlier model at my last newspaper job.

ah! that’s the 2nd time i’ve been impressed by a point-and-shooter’s video, and it turned out to be a Canon. so i’ll almost definitely opt for a Canon when i upgrade in 2008. thanks!
